Emails Disappear or Move to the Wrong Folder in Airmail
If an email seems to disappear after you star or unstar it, or other emails move into a folder when you only meant to move one, the messages are almost always still in your account. In most cases they have been moved or archived rather than permanently deleted. Here is how to find them and prevent it from happening again.
First, find the message
- In Airmail, check the All Mail, Archive and Trash folders for the affected account.
- Open your mailbox in a web browser (for example iCloud.com, Gmail, Outlook or Zoho) and look in Trash and the All Mail or All view, then search for the sender or subject.
- Avoid emptying the Trash until you have located the message, so it stays recoverable.
Check your swipe and quick actions
Airmail lets you assign actions such as Archive, Move, Trash or Star to swipes and buttons. If one of these is set to Archive or Trash, a message can leave the Inbox unexpectedly.
- On Mac: open Airmail then Settings (Preferences) then Actions or Gestures.
- On iPhone or iPad: open the app Settings then Quick Actions or Swipes.
Review these so that starring a message, or a single swipe, is not tied to Archive or Trash.
Moving an email to a folder
Before dragging a message or using the right-click Move command, make sure only the message you want is selected and no other messages are highlighted. Using the right-click Move command on a single selected message is the most reliable way to move just one email.
Still happening?
If unrelated emails keep moving, or messages disappear even with the correct settings, please contact us with your Airmail version and your macOS or iOS version (Airmail then About Airmail) and your email provider, and we will be glad to investigate further.
