How to Use Smart Folders in Airmail

Problem

You want to create virtual folders that automatically collect emails matching certain criteria.

Solution

Smart Folders are dynamic folders that show emails matching your defined filters, without moving the actual emails.

Creating a Smart Folder on macOS

  1. Go to Settings → Smart Folders
  2. Click Add Smart Folder
  3. Give it a name (e.g., "Important This Week")
  4. Set the filter criteria:
    • From specific senders
    • Subject contains keywords
    • Date range
    • Has attachments
    • Is unread/starred
    • From specific account
  5. Save the Smart Folder

Using Smart Folders

  • Smart Folders appear in the sidebar
  • They update automatically as new matching emails arrive
  • Emails are not moved — they remain in their original folders
  • Smart Folders are essentially saved searches

Ideas for Smart Folders

  • "Attachments This Week" — emails with attachments from the past 7 days
  • "VIP Unread" — unread emails from your VIP contacts
  • "Work Projects" — emails containing specific project names

Note: Smart Folders is a Pro feature.
