Privacy Mode and Privacy Settings - Airmail for macOS
Privacy Mode and Privacy Settings - Airmail for macOS
Airmail is built with a strong commitment to user privacy. While Airmail for iOS offers a dedicated "Privacy Mode" toggle, on macOS the same privacy guarantees are achieved through a combination of individual privacy-related settings that you can enable or disable according to your preferences.
What "Privacy Mode" means in Airmail for macOS
On macOS, privacy protections are managed individually rather than through a single toggle. The following options collectively provide a level of privacy equivalent to the iOS Privacy Mode:
- All your data remains stored locally on your Mac.
- - Tracking pixels and remote content can be blocked at the message level.
- - Analytics and crash reports can be disabled.
- - AI features and the MCP Server are disabled by default and require explicit opt-in.
How to configure privacy settings on macOS
- Disable remote image loading (block tracking pixels)
- Go to Airmail > Preferences > Privacy and disable "Load remote content automatically". This prevents senders from confirming that you have opened their email and blocks most email tracking pixels.
- Disable analytics and diagnostics
- Go to Airmail > Preferences > Privacy and uncheck "Send anonymous usage statistics" and "Send crash reports". No usage data will be transmitted to our servers.
- Keep AI features disabled
- Go to Airmail > Preferences > AI. By default, all AI integrations — including the MCP Server introduced in version 27.0.0 — are disabled. No AI tool can access your mailbox unless you explicitly enable it and authorize a specific application.
- Use account-level controls
- Go to Airmail > Preferences > Accounts to manage per-account preferences such as Smart Inbox categorization, signature handling, and notification permissions.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is my email content sent to Airmail's servers?
No. Airmail for macOS connects directly between your Mac and your mail provider (Gmail, iCloud, IMAP, Exchange, etc.). Email content is not relayed through Airmail's infrastructure.
Q: Does Airmail use my emails to train AI models?
No. Airmail does not use your email data to train any AI model.
Q: Can I use Airmail without any AI features at all?
Yes. AI features are entirely opt-in. If you do not enable them in Preferences > AI, Airmail will function as a traditional, fast, and privacy-focused email client.
Q: Where can I find an equivalent of the iOS "Privacy Mode" switch on macOS?
A single equivalent toggle is currently planned for a future release. In the meantime, the combination of settings described above provides the same level of protection.
