Spell Check Not Working in Airmail on Mac
Problem
The "Check Spelling While Typing" option doesn't work in Airmail, or spell check is not underlining misspelled words in the composer.
Solution
Airmail uses the macOS system spell checker. If spell check isn't working in Airmail, the issue is usually with the macOS-level settings.
Fix macOS Spell Check Settings
- Open System Settings (or System Preferences)
- Go to Keyboard → Text Input → Input Sources → Edit
- Make sure "Correct spelling automatically" is enabled
- Also check that "Check spelling while typing" is turned on
Reset Spell Check in Airmail
- In Airmail, open a new compose window
- Click on Edit in the menu bar
- Go to Spelling and Grammar
- Make sure "Check Spelling While Typing" is checked
- Also check "Check Grammar With Spelling" if needed
Language Settings
If you write in multiple languages, make sure the correct language is selected:
- In the compose window, go to Edit → Spelling and Grammar → Show Spelling and Grammar
- At the bottom of the panel, select the correct language or "Automatic by Language"
Still Not Working?
- Try restarting Airmail
- Reset macOS spell check by deleting ~/Library/Spelling/ folder and restarting
- Update macOS to the latest version
